Miraclean C6: Aqueous Detergent for Carbon Removal In Ultrasonics
Chautauqua Chemicals Co., Inc. has recently developed and released a new and advanced aqueous cleaning detergent designed specifically designed to better remove carbon in ultrasonic cleaning applications. Miraclean C6 has the ability to breakdown the carbon while peeling the deposit from the surface. This advanced formulation contains specific proprietary ingredients to encapsulate and not allow the dislodged particles to adhere back onto the surface. Miraclean C6 has proven to be invaluable in cleaning prior to remanufacturing in industries such as public transportation (bus, train, subway, airlines, ships, etc.), automotive mechanics, firearms, motorsports/racing industry, and heavy machinery.
Non-Hazardous
This high-end cleaner is set apart from traditional carbon cleaners because Miraclean C6 does not contain any harsh solvents. C6 is a water-based cleaner that ships non-hazardous. The benefits are endless when dealing with an aqueous cleaner vs. a flammable solvent. The operator is no longer exposed to the fumes and chemical contact of the solvent. Plus, the solvents typically are flammable or at least, combustible. It is very dangerous to use flammable solvents within ultrasonic systems, due to static and explosion potential.
Apart from safety, aqueous solutions cavitate far better in ultrasonics than solvents, solvents have a continuous “gas off” where gas bubbles are created within the ultrasonic field. These gas bubbles severely dampen and block the ultrasonic wave from coming in contact with the part. Aqueous solutions create an excellent field for peak ultrasonic strength which allows you to receive the peak efficiency.
How C6 Carbon Cleaner Works
Miraclean C6 is a proprietary blend of surfactants designed to degrease and attack hardened, burnt on Carbon deposits. C6 dissolves the carbon into solution while simultaneously loosening and peeling the deposit from the surface. You can see in the photo below how the C6 Carbon Cleaner is dissolving the carbon, going into the solution in a smokey like wave, then continue to darken the solution. While after C6 Carbon Clean at the same time, specialty ingredients are loosening the deposit and working it up off the metal. Slight agitation can break it free but the use of ultrasonics blast this chemically loosen deposit completely off the part substantially faster. The benefit of the peeling action versus a complete dissolution of the carbon is that now in flake form, it can be easily filtered out of the solution. The entire time flakes remain in the cleaner, it is being chemically attached and dissolving. If the tank has a filtration system, the flakes can be removed from the cleaner, therefore extending the life and power of the cleaner. The longer a cleaner stays active, the more use you receive for your money!

The detergency in C6 is great to remove carbon, machining oils, lapping compounds, grease, brake dust, and polishing compounds. To be effective on grease, oils, and carbon, the C6 needs a pH in the base levels causing long term exposure to have some negative effects on Aluminum alloys.
C6 Tank Makeup User Guide
Miraclean C6 ships as a liquid concentrate designed to be diluted with water. First you will need to determine the Volume of your tank. To determine the total gallonage of the tank, use the formula below. Testing parts helps dial in the exact concentration needed to clean your parts.
- Length x Width x Fill Height = Solution Volume (Gallons)
(L x W x FH = V)
Once the volume has been determined, simply multiply that number by the concentration you are trying to reach in decimals. For example, 5% = 0.05, 10% = 0.10, 15% = 0.15, as so on. This will give you the total amount of cleaner you should add to your tank.
- 10% Concentration: Volume (gallons) x (0.10) = Cleaner Volume to add (Gallons)
- 10% concentration in a 20 gallon tank example:
- 20 x (0.10) = 2 gallons
- Therefore, add 2 gallons of Miraclean C6 to 18 gallons of water for a 10% concentration
- Best practice is to add a half tank of water, add the 2 gallons of C6, then top off tank with water.

Analytical Method (Equipment available from Chautauqua Chemicals Co.)
- Pipette a 10 mL sample into a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask and allow to cool to room temperature.
- Add 25 mL of distilled water.
- Titrate with 0.1N hydrochloric acid until pH drops to 8.3.
- Calculation: Percent Concentration of Miraclean C6 = mLs of 0.1N HCl x 3.134
For situations where a tight chemical tolerance is needed, Miraclean C6 can be controlled to around +- 2 mS using a conductivity meter. Due to the cleaner shipping as a concentrate, it lends its self nicely to be used in Automatic Chemical Feed situations.
